If a person tries to remember a friend or their favorite tree in the yard, they see an image in their mind. They express it by saying that they are seeing with their mind’s eye or forming a mental picture. By using our ability to visualize and project our mind forward we can rearrange the furniture in a room, design a plan, see future goals accomplished and even visualize brilliant colors and textures. By projecting our mind forward we can even find solutions to problems. We may project ourselves into the future in our imagination and leave the pressures of life for the moment by escaping into imaginary daydreams. We may go back in time and pull up an imagination image that may have elements from the past but may have blended with other facts so that two people may have different memories of the same event. Past images are not always accurate. We may have a visualization memory from the past that goes back to a town or place and it will not be the way we remembered it. Dreams are a type of imagery and can seem very real. The critical part of the brain is not analyzing and therefore at the moment the person believes that what is happening in the dream is actually taking place. Whether we imagine or visualize or to what extent it doesn’t matter. Our mental images can and do influence our moods and the events in our lives. Visualization and imagination is an important part of a child’s life and serves a very useful function. They love to pretend and enjoy fantasy and daydreams in which they can be creative and inventive. When we visualize or imagine something new, like a new habit, skill or behavior, we activate the prefrontal area of the brain. This is the part of the brain that is responsible for making a plan and forming a program that will improve our performance. There have been studies indicating that when a person imagines running, small but measurable amounts of contractions actually take place in the muscles associated with running. The same neurological pathways are excited by imagined or visualized running as by actual running. We are the result of what we think, visualize, and imagine in our heart, and our mind. Our brain is the cognitive center of your body where ideas are formed, emotions felt, and memory stored. Since the brain controls the body it makes sense that positive thoughts and visualizations can transform people’s lives in wonderful ways, influencing their moods and contributing to a state of health. A hypnotherapist utilizing proper visualization techniques teaches the subconscious mind to identify in a different and positive way with a particular habit or behavior.
